New Arrivals

"Rhett Butler "

Announcing the arrival of "Rhett Butler" on March 15th, 2007

Our newest arrival has caused somewhat of a stir with all the BrightHaven birds!! Just see how handsome he is!!

Meet Rhett Butler, of “Gone with the Wind” fame (for those of you who are too young to remember the famous novel and film). As the story goes, rebellious, bright and exuberant Scarlett (O’Hara) finally meets her heart’s desire, and a man who is more than a match for herself in the dashing and debonair Mr Rhett Butler.

And so finally our very own lovely lady, Scarlett now has her Rhett – and what a stunning, proud and gorgeous man he is!! Rhett came to us from Sebastopol resident and BH friend Suzanne Gutsch, who was having problems as this sweet guy was being badly abused by her other roosters.

Well, no more of that – it is now a life filled with love, happiness and so much fun in the sun for Mr Butler!

"Dixie "

Announcing the arrival of "Dixie" on
Febuary 6th, 2007

Dixie arrived in early February, fresh from the Petaluma Shelter. She had been taken there after being found sitting on eggs under a hedge on a busy Petaluma Street!!

Thin, scared and clearly not used to “home comforts” Dixie immediately found a way to escape the chicken coup, but I am happy to report she is now gradually learning to trust us, is eating well and very obviously gaining weight.

Dixie seems very happy with her new chicken, duck and geese friends and will hopefully learn to love us all too in a very short time.

"Andy "

Announcing the arrival of "Andy" on
December 17th 2006

Thanks to the kindness of two BrightHaven friends Sally and Sheila, Andy now has a forever home here.

Andy is 17½ years old and has lived 10 years in a derelict house. It was here, whilst helping care for him each week, that Sheila noticed him walking in circles unable to stabilize himself.

Sally took the responsibility for his medical care and when it was decided that nothing conventionally could be done for this boy – he came here to live. He suffers hyperthyroidism and some kind of neurological damage which appears to have rendered him blind and uncommunicative. He is already settling in happily and is shaking and shivering less and gradually walking in less tight circles. Andy no longer needs medication to persuade him to eat and adores the natural diet, so we hope soon to see a gradual improvement in his greasy lank fur.

Thanks to Sheila’s generosity the renowned Dr Jeff Levy will soon be prescribing for Andy and we then hope to see a huge improvement in his health.

"Lily-D "

Announcing the arrival of "Lily-D" (We already have a cat called Lily - so the "D" stands for dog!!!)on
September 22nd 2006

Lily arrived September 22nd 2006 after her uncaring owner tried to leave her at a Mendocino Shelter – due her advancing years, (all 16 of them!) incontinence, obvious deafness and degree of lost sight!!

This cute little bundle also has a pretty bad heart problem too – Who can wonder that she reminds us all so much of our dear Bun-Bun who only died a week ago. Maybe fate brought Lily to us, who knows…but we will surely take good care of her and lavish her with love and kindness for however long she is able to stay with us.

"Teddy "

Announcing the arrival of "Teddy" on
September 19th 2006

BrightHaven old friend and neighbour Jean called us last week to beg sanctuary for this old fellow as she is moving away from the area and poor Teddy is now in danger from duck hunters if he stays at his current pond.

One look at this regal face tells you that he is a wise old soul. Teddy stood around for a few days sizing up our chickens, ducks and geese - They him too.

Finally it was decided he seemed to be a good match for the family and now he is swimming in a new pond!!!
